What is ACAS?
The Air Cargo Advance Screening program is a US security initiative that requires certain data elements to be submitted to CBP before cargo is loaded onto an aircraft bound for the United States. The program aims to identify high-risk shipments before they are placed on a plane, enhancing aviation security.

How ACAS works
Before cargo is loaded at the foreign airport, the airline or freight forwarder must submit advance data to CBP. This data is screened against intelligence databases to identify potential security threats. CBP then issues one of three responses: a green light allowing the cargo to be loaded, a request for additional screening at the origin airport, or a do-not-load instruction preventing the cargo from being placed on the aircraft.
Required data elements
ACAS requires submission of the shipper's name and address, the consignee's name and address, a description of the cargo, the total weight and piece count, the house air waybill number, and the flight details. This information must be transmitted as early as possible, and no later than before the cargo is loaded onto the aircraft.
Impact on shippers
For shippers, ACAS means you must provide accurate and complete shipment information earlier in the process. Vague or generic cargo descriptions can trigger additional screening and delays. Incorrect shipper or consignee information can result in do-not-load orders.
The key to avoiding ACAS-related delays is ensuring your freight forwarder has complete and accurate shipment data well before the planned departure. Last-minute bookings with incomplete information are more likely to encounter screening issues.
